الرياضة في البرنوصي

A football school that fed Raja, Wydad and the national team; a boxing gym that produced a world champion and an Olympic medallist. And a club that now needs its district.

Rachad Bernoussi

Founded in 1961, Rachad Bernoussi is the district's shared institution. Moroccan sports writers have long called it a pépinière — a nursery — for the players it developed and sold on: Youssef Safri, Mohammed Rabii, Khalid Rahilou, Hicham Louissi, Bouchaib El Moubarki, Ayoub Nanah among them.

It reached the top flight in 1991, the Throne Cup final in 2007 and the CAF Confederation Cup in 2008, where it beat Espérance de Tunis at home.

The 2025–26 season ended in relegation from the National Amateur division to Amateur 1, the fourth tier. Supporters and former players have called for professional management and a proper home ground. The club's president, Hicham Chabboura, also sits on the arrondissement council.

The boxing school

Chabab Bernoussi's gym and coach El Harfi El Ghazouani shaped Mohammed Rabii, who in 2015 became world amateur champion at 69 kg and in 2016 won Olympic bronze in Rio, where Achraf Kharroubi also boxed for Morocco. A generation earlier, Khalid Rahilou — who spent formative years in Bernoussi — won the WBA super-lightweight world title in 1997.

Sport today

Ten neighbourhood pitches opened in March 2025, a reported 6.5 million MAD investment. The Association for the Development of Sports and Leisure Spaces (ADESL) runs community facilities across the prefecture. The question now is whether the pitches can feed a club again.
