Be ready for the risks that matter here
A dense residential district next to a large industrial zone, on a coast that floods in heavy rain and in a country where earthquakes are felt.
Gas water heaters and carbon monoxide
Butane water heaters in closed bathrooms kill people in Morocco every winter. Keep a vent open, never block air bricks, and have the heater installed outside the bathroom where possible. Headache, dizziness or nausea while showering: open the door and window, get everyone into fresh air, call 15 or 141.
Flooding
Heavy autumn and winter rain can flood roads within minutes. Never drive or walk into water in an underpass or tunnel — the depth is invisible and the current strong. Move valuables and electrics off the floor, and switch off power at the meter if water enters your home.
Earthquakes
The September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake was felt in Casablanca. During shaking: drop, cover under a sturdy table, hold on. Stay away from windows and balconies. Afterwards, leave by the stairs, not the lift, and keep clear of damaged façades.
Industrial incident
If you are told of a chemical release or see heavy smoke from the industrial zone: go indoors, close windows and doors, turn off fans and air-conditioning, and follow instructions from the authorities and Protection Civile on local radio and official channels.
Fire at home
Get everyone out, close the door behind you, then call 15. Do not go back for belongings. Never throw water on a pan of burning oil — cover it with a lid and turn off the heat.
Heat
During heatwaves, check on older neighbours, keep children and the sick out of the midday sun, drink water regularly and never leave anyone in a parked car.
A family plan in ten minutes
Sit down once with your household and agree on these. Print this page and keep it near the door.
- A meeting place near home, and one outside the neighbourhood.
- One relative outside Casablanca everyone will call to say they are safe.
- Emergency numbers saved in every phone, including children's.
- Photocopies of CNIE, family book (livret de famille) and medical cards in a plastic sleeve.
- Two weeks of any regular medicines, and written prescriptions.
- A bag with water, a torch, a phone charger or power bank, a first-aid kit and some cash.
- Know where to turn off gas, water and electricity.
- Plan for anyone who cannot walk far, cannot see or hear, or needs medical equipment.
